A nine-year-old boy from the Bronx was fatally shot in a robbery attempt earlier this week a half hour after his flight landed in the Dominican Republic to take a father and son vacation, police said.

Gioser Luís Feliz, 9, was shot in the head after a bullet pierced the vehicle he was driving in when it got caught amid a band of robbers, just moments after the boy and his father exited the Santiago’s Cibao International Airport on Wednesday.

The child and his father, Sergio Luis Feliz, had just landed from a New York city airport and were going to visit a family member who lived on the island, Univision reported.

The robbery suspects drove a rented car and reportedly trailed the boy and his father from the airport, demanding the two pull over. When they did not, they opened fire.

The little boy was transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors were unable to revive him.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic on Thursday said five men — Elian Martínez Sánchez, Derlin Javier Mercado Martinez, José Manuel Almonte Santana, Luis Ángel Vargas Brito and Cesar Junior Ulloa Cuevas, and—were all detained and facing charges for the fatal shooting.

President Luis Abinader denounced the killing, tweeting on Thursday, “Since I found out about the death of the child Gioser Luis Féliz, I am following up on the case.

“I have been informed by the Director of the National Police about the arrest of the 5 criminals who committed this horrendous crime. Now justice must be ensured in the courts.”

The boy’s family is reportedly making arrangements to transport him back to New York so his family can lay him to rest and have funeral services.
