An off-duty upstate New York police officer killed a woman and shot another before committing suicide on Monday in Rochester, New York, according to police.
Authorities identified the member of the Greece Police Department as Tiffani Gatson, 29.
Emergency responders responded to a call reporting multiple people shot at a residence on Costar Street around 7:20 p.m., Lt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department said.
Police found the three women outside the home in an apparent murder-suicide. According to the state Attorney General’s Office Gatson shot two other women before shooting herself.
Angely Solis, 27, died at the scene. Gatson was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital but died shortly after she arrived.
The third victim, a woman in her 30s, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital after being shot several times in her upper body. She is recovering from her injuries and is in stable condition without life-threatening injuries. Police have not yet released her name.
Police determined that the incident stemmed from a “domestic-related altercation,” Bello added. However, he did not clarify the relationship between the three women.
The Attorney General’s Office was called to the scene and is investigating the incident because the shooter was a "law enforcement officer in a neighboring jurisdiction."
Tiffany Gatson joined the Greece Police Department in September 2018 as the first African American woman on the force.
"Unfortunately, we have seen events of this nature occur all too frequently and struggle to find answers in the aftermath," said Greece Police Chief Michael Woods.
"The effects are far-reaching, from those who have lost loved ones to others throughout law enforcement organizations when a police officer commits such a horrible act, to our entire community. It is simply devastating, and so many people are hurting right now," he added.
