A teenager was killed and ten others were injured after a boat crashed and capsized on Sunday in the Florida Keys.
Fourteen people were onboard a vessel that crashed near Boca Chita Key in Biscayne Bay at around 6:30 p.m. The boat, a 28-foot Robalo center console, capsized after hitting a channel marker, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Everyone on board the vessel —two adults and 12 teens—were ejected from it.
When the Miami-Dade Police arrived at the crash scene, they pulled people out of the water, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Juan Garrandes said in a video provided by the fire rescue agency.
Police took the passengers to the island of Elliot Key. Eleven people were hurt, said Miami-Dade Rescue, adding that four suffered traumatic injuries and had to be airlifted. The rest were wrapped in white blankets and taken by Fire rescue workers to different hospitals.
Lucy Fernandez, a student at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami, died of her injuries. Hundreds gathered this week at the Catholic high school for a prayer vigil, the school said.
“Known for her smile, larger-than-life personality, and signature laugh, Lucy was a joy to all who knew her and a shining light at our school,” her all-girls Catholic high school wrote on Facebook. “The hundreds of people who joined us in the grotto this evening, to pray for the repose of her soul, are a testament to her beautiful legacy of faith, love, and sisterhood.”
The status of the rest of the injured people is unclear. At least two other victims were also students at Lourdes Academy and another was a student at the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart.
Alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the accident, reported The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
