Thirty-four-year-old Ukrainian captain Valeriy Chybineiev was killed in the battle near Hostomel, a city on the outskirts of Kyiv, on his birthday on March 3.
Chybineiev received the “Hero of Ukraine” award in 2016 , which is granted by the president to citizens who show “personal heroism and great labor achievements.”
The award, one of the highest a Ukrainian can have, has only been given to 509 people. He was also given a gold star medal the same year.
