Honda announces plan to produce Civic hybrid model in US, cites Trump tariffs as factor

Japan-based Honda Motor will shift production of one of its U.S.-bound hybrids to Indiana, following President Trump recently imposing an across-the-board, 10% tariff on U.S. trading partners. 

“The decision was made based on external factors, including the Trump administration’s tariffs,” a company spokesperson said Wednesday.

Production of the five-door Civic model at the company's Yorii factory, near Tokyo, is likely to end in June or July, according to Reuters.

Honda imports roughly 160,000 cars from Mexico to the U.S. each year, an executive said in November 2024. The U.S. is also the largest market for Honda and fellow Japan carmakers Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co.
