Leader of Venezuelan opposition Juan Guaido said on Friday that Venezuelans will be celebrating Christmas in “difficult times” since shopping for gifts and getting ingredients for a meal “entails many sacrifices” in the country.

“Today we have a more unequal country with privileges for a small elite that is becoming smaller and smaller and degraded. Making hallacas, preparing dinner, buying new clothes, sounds uphill, involves many sacrifices or the idea is almost nostalgic", he said in a video he posted on his Twitter.

The regime Nicolás Maduro wants to "sell the misleading idea that things are fine, but Venezuelan families know what is happening," Guaido said.

"Only in democracy can we live well, with progress, for the reunion of our people, Christmas together again,” he added.

“Venezuelans receive this Christmas in difficult times, but with the hope of celebrating together as a family, sharing a Christmas table and with dreams fulfilled in the country,” he tweeted. “We fought for it and we will not give up. May God bless Venezuela.”

In 2019, Guaido declared he was acting president of Venezuela. Many countries recognize the interim government and Guaido as head of state of Venezuela, deeming the 2018 re-election of socialist President Nicolas Maduro as fraudulent.
