A trio of thieves stole $300,000 from a Brink’s armored truck in Brooklyn after they distracted its driver, authorities said on Sunday.
The armored vehicle was dropping off money at a Chase bank at 5423 Eight Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn at around 1 p.m. on Friday when two men approached the driver asking for directions, the New York Post reported.
“While the employee was distracted, another unknown individual quickly removed a bag that was left unattended on the bumper of the armored Brink’s truck and fled the scene on foot,” police said.
The stolen bag contained $300,000 in cash.
A police spokesperson said authorities do not believe that the theft was an inside job, instead, they called it “a crime of opportunity.”
“We can confirm there was an incident involving a Brink’s crew in Brooklyn on Friday and we are working with law enforcement,” the armored-truck company said in a statement Sunday. “At this time, we don’t have any further information to share.”
The three suspects remain on the loose. If apprehended, the men could face up to 15 years in prison for grand larceny, reported Business Insider.
NYPD released photos and descriptions of the three suspects and are asking anyone with any information in regard to this incident to contact them.
The man who grabbed the bag was described as a slim individual wearing a black winter hat, a black hoodie, gray pants, and black sneakers. One of the men who approached the police was described as an individual with a medium build and was wearing a black winter hat with a white trim, a black winter coat, gray pants, and black sneakers. The third suspect was described as having a medium build and was wearing a black winter hat, black jacket, black pants, black sneakers, black backpack, and a black face mask.
