Second person pushed onto New York subway tracks in past weeks

The victim survived because the train braked in time as it arrived at the Fulton subway station in Lower Manhattan. A similar attack killed one woman last week in Times Square.

A 62-year-old man was pushed onto the tracks of the New York City subway tracks on Sunday, days after an Asian-American woman was killed in a similar fashion.

The man, whose name has not been released by police, was pushed from behind onto the southbound tracks at the Fulton subway station in Lower Manhattan but survived because the train braked in time. The victim climbed back onto the platform and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The suspect fled the scene, and the New York Police Department said no arrests have yet been made.

The incident comes about a week after a similar attack killed Michelle Alyssa Go, 40, who was pushed off the platform at the Times Square station in front of an oncoming train.

Police arrested Martial Simon, 61, a homeless man with a history of violence and mental health issues. Simon was charged with second-degree murder and is awaiting a court-ordered mental health evaluation.

The latest attack will test newly-elected New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), who has promised to take a tougher stance on crime in the city. Transit crime is up 65.5% this year from 2021, according to NYPD statistics.

Adams told CNN he planned to “flood our system with mental health professionals and law enforcement working as a team to move out the disorder that's clearly in the subway system in our city.”

"These incidents are unacceptable and have to stop," Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Chair and CEO Janno Lieber told local news.

Lieber warned people to stay away from the edge of platforms and said the agency was considering changes to make subway platforms safer.
