A woman tragically died moments after becoming engaged when she fell off of a cliff in a scenic spot in Turkey, authorities said.

Nizamettin Gursu had just popped the question near a steep cliff in Canakkale, a city in northwestern Turkey on July 6. Yesim Demir joyfully agreed.

After asking the question, the groom-to-be returned to their car to bring back celebratory food and drinks for a picnic, when he suddenly heard a terrifying scream. When he returned to the spot, he discovered that his 39-year-old fiancée had fallen over the edge of the 100-foot cliff.

Gursu immediately called for help. Demir survived the 104-foot (32-meter) fall. However, her injuries were so severe that she passed away soon after, despite resuscitation efforts from medics.

Gursi said that he had picked the spot to get engaged because they believed it would be romantic. It is a spot popular among visitors to watch the sunset. However, they never expected such a happy event to end so tragically.

“We chose it to have a romantic memory after the proposal. We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down,” Gursu said.

Authorities closed off the cliff while police investigated the incident. On July 15, the area reopened “in a controlled manner.” No pedestrians or vehicles are being allowed near the area 15-20 minutes after sunset, according to local media.

“This is a place where everyone comes and watches the sunset,” the couples’ friends told local media.

“However, the roads are very bad and there is no precaution on the edge of the cliff. A fence should be drawn here, precautions should be taken.”
