Dozens of people were injured after a double-decker tour bus crashed with an MTA city bus on Thursday night in Manhattan, authorities said.
The double-decker tour bus operated by TopView Sightseeing crashed into the MTA X38 express bus on 1st Avenue and 23rd Street at around 7 p.m., said the New York Fire Department. According to police, the MTA bus had the right of way but was hit on its side by the tour bus, which ran a red light.
"This tour bus behind us seems to have run a red light and t-boned our bus, hit it twice, it was going so fast I think," MTA Transit President Richard Davey said.
Both of the buses were fully occupied at the time of the accident, leaving dozens of people injured. Some of the victims on the double-decker bus had to be removed through the windows of the bus using ropes and ladders.
"Any time you have two buses involved you have a significant number of patients that likely need to be treated," said FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy.

Around 60 individuals requested to be treated at the scene, while 18 others were transported to nearby hospitals. FDNY officials said none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries. Most of those hurt suffered minor injuries such as cuts, bruises, and scrapes, as well as some suspected fractures.
“That number may fluctuate a little bit down and hopefully no one else will come out as seriously injured,” said Deputy Chief Paul Hopper of EMS Division 1.
The driver of the tour bus is expected to receive a summons since there was no criminal intent behind the accident.
The accident is still being investigated by authorities.
“We’re all quite fortunate it was not much worse,” Hopper added.
