Cubans with other citizenships may hold positions within the regime

These exceptions can only be approved by the President of the Republic

The modification of Article 18 of Decree Law No. 13 on the "System of Work with State and Government Cadres and their Reserves" allows Cubans with other citizenships to hold positions within the government.

These exceptions can only be approved by the President of the Republic, currently Miguel Díaz-Canel, according to the official website of the Cuban Parliament.

"Exceptionally, the President of the Republic may approve the holding of a position by a person who possesses another citizenship, in addition to Cuban citizenship, at the proposal of the corresponding authority, except for the cases provided by law," reads the website.

The new decree was approved on December 8 by the Council of State. The amendment also allows regime officials of to apply for other citizenships.

The Council of State meeting was attended by the president of the National Assembly of People's Power, Esteban Lazo Hernández, and the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and Cuban ruler, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

These bills will be submitted to the vote during the Eighth Ordinary Session of the Ninth Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP) to be held on December 21.
