shootout in a community east of downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday left three Los Angeles Police Department officers hospitalized and a suspect dead, officials said.

LAPD officers were called to a location near North Mission Road and North Broadway in Lincoln Heights at around 3:50 p.m. to investigate a parolee at large. During their investigation, the officers came across a person “who refused to comply with the commands,” LAPD Assistant Chief Alfred Labrada said in a news conference.

“At one point during the search, the suspect exited and fired at the officers, wounding three officers,” Labrada, leading to a lengthy standoff between police officers and the suspect, who had barricaded himself inside a shed. Police tried to get the suspect to leave his hiding spot by using gas.

During the confrontation, at least one officer opened fire against the subject, fatally wounding him. However, the number of shots fired and how many officers opened fire remain under investigation.

The wounded police officers were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They are listed in stable condition, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Michael Moore.

Police issued a city-wide tactical alert and asked nearby residents to stay indoors and lock their apartment doors while police searched for the suspect.

“Every day, the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department put themselves in harm’s way,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said at the news conference. “Tonight is a reminder that the danger is very real. I’m relieved and grateful that these three brave officers are in stable condition and are able to have a conversation – with two of them, when I checked in on them just now.”
