Second train details in Ohio, a month after East Palestine

A second train derailed on Saturday in Ohio, one month after a train containing toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine and raised environmental concerns. 

Twenty-eight cars of the train derailed at around 5 p.m. on Saturday near Springfield, Ohio, about 80 miles northeast of Cincinnati. The 212 Norfolk Southern car train was headed from Bellevue, Ohio, to Birmingham, Alabama.

Multiple agencies responded to the derailment. Local authorities and first responders that arrived at the scene said that no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment. 

"None of those derailed cars were carrying hazardous material, and there were no injuries reported to the public or the two-man crew operating the train," said Kraig Barner, Norfolk Southern’s general manager of operations. 

The wreckage was cleaned up by Sunday afternoon. Investigators are investigating the incident to determine what led to the derailment. 

"This derailment, as all derailments, will be fully investigated and the findings will be turned over to the Federal Railroad Administration," Barner said.

The incident comes one month after a train derailed near East Palestine, Ohio, spilling toxic chemicals that forced nearby towns to evacuate. 

On Feb. 3, a 150-car train derailed in East Palestine, near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border, causing a fire and damaging several cars that were carrying hazardous chemicals, including vinyl chloride. Authorities ordered nearby residents to evacuate, fearing a possible explosion. 

The chemical and other toxic substances have spread into nearby air and water, raising environmental and health concerns with the area’s residents, including headaches, burning lungs, nasal drainage, unknown rashes, and irritated eyes.
