A small plane crashed into a multifamily residential building in New Hampshire on Friday, killing two people onboard and setting off a 3-alarm fire, authorities said on Saturday.

The single-engine aircraft departed from Keene Dillant-Hopkins Airport shortly before the accident, which took place at around 6:55 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The airplane crashed into a two-story garage attached to a multifamily building, causing a 3-alarm fire. The building itself sustained “significant damage” in the rear part of the structure.

“There were no injuries at the multifamily building. Unfortunately, those on the plane have perished,” the city said in a Facebook post.

All of the residents of the apartment building’s four apartments were home at the time of the crash. Fortunately, none were injured, according to officials.

The residents were all displaced from their homes due to the extent of the damage caused by the crash, at least until the structure can be further assessed, said Keen Fire Chief Donald Farquhar at a press conference on Saturday. The Red Cross is helping relocate the residents.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation and National Transportation Safety Board will conduct the investigation.

Officials said it was still too early to determine what caused the crash. Authorities left the identifiable parts of the plane in the building until the investigation concludes.

"The City expresses sympathy for the people who lost their lives in this tragic accident and for their families and loved ones," Keene City Manager Elizabeth Dragon shared in a statement.
