A viral TikTok shows Mariah Carey using a teleprompter to display the lyrics for her iconic Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas” during this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

“Yes, Mariah Carey is using a teleprompter for lyrics of her most famous song at Macy’s Day Parade,” TikTok user Sydney Barina wrote on the video which has amassed millions of views after it was posted on November 26.

While the video shows the lyrics on the teleprompter for her performance, it is unclear if the Grammy Award-winning artist actually used the visual assistance to sing her hit song or if it is standard practice for the whole parade.

Mariah’s fans, however, stepped in to defend her in the comments section of the video.

“TV production employee here, the entire broadcast has these running in the script. For her, it’s probably a failsafe in case her in-ear fails,” one user commented.

“It’s called a confidence monitor. Many singers and performers use them. We use them at the church I work for,” another person said.

A spokesperson for Macy’s told Insider that the teleprompter was being used to give the audience "the opportunity to sing along" to the Christmas classic.

The 96th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place on November 24, featuring several performers and giant balloons. Mariah Carey opened for Santa Claus in this year’s parade, a performance that the artist called “a dream come true.”
