On Nov. 5, 2018, DaBaby (Jonathan Kirk) allegedly shot and killed 19-year-old Jaylin Craig at a Walmart near Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a video obtained by Rolling Stone magazine that was never shown in court.
DaBaby had previously claimed that he never pulled the trigger during the fatal fight, according to NME. Craig's family argued that justice was not served because a key witness did not come forward and the now-released footage was not shown in court, Fox 46 reported at the time. The county's case was dismissed.
However, the following June, the state district attorney decided to file his own charges against the "Rockstar" rapper. DaBaby was then convicted of carrying a concealed weapon and sentenced to 12 months probation with a suspended jail sentence.
In the video obtained by Rolling Stone, Craig's friend Henry Douglas enters the frame as DaBaby charges in and beats him.
Their fight moves throughout the grocery store as Craig approaches them, apparently holding a gun before he appears to put it away. A female shopper suddenly slips out of her shopping cart moments before DaBaby re-enters frame and picks up what appears to be a gun from the floor and stuffs it in his pants.
"I feel like they just swept it under the rug. [Kirk] knows what he did. I'm not doing this for fame or anything, because at the end of the day, Jaylin Craig is dead," Craig's mother, LaWanda Horsley, told Rolling Stone about the investigation.
The victim's family claims the rapper started the fight because he was angry at Craig and Douglas recognized him. During the altercation, Douglas' eye was bruised and he suffered a cut on his forehead that required stitches, according to Rolling Stone.
Days later, DaBaby referred to the shooting in a story on his Instagram and said he was in the store with his family, including her 1-year-old daughter, shopping for winter clothes, when someone approached her with a gun. He said that if he didn't defend herself, his children could have been shot.
DaBaby reacted to the released video. On Twitter, he responded to radio host Hot 107.9 Ebro, who asked, "Why are people acting like Walmart, the police, and the courts haven't seen the 2018 video of the Da Baby incident at Walmart?"
"Because they were brainwashed by the media,” responded DaBaby.
