Canadian filmmaker Paul Haggis, who won the Best Picture Oscar twice, said Monday that he could not afford the $7.5 million award that jurors awarded his rape accuser Haleigh Breest last week – an amount they later raised to $10 million.

The successful screenwriter and director testified that he only had “a couple hundred thousand” left to his name after paying almost $3 million in legal fees fighting Breest’s lawsuit, large donations to the Church of Scientology and two divorces, reports the New York Post.

He also complained that he could not find work in Hollywood while on trial. Breest, a former publicist, claimed she was raped by Haggis at his Soho apartment in Jan. 2013.

The Hollywood veteran won consecutive Academy Awards for Best Picture as the producer and screenwriter for “Million Dollar Baby” (2004) and “Crash” (2005), the latter of which he also directed.

Haggis’ other notable works include the TV series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” which he co-created, and the two recent James Bond films he helped write – “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace.”

His lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, told the court that the former Scientologist had been “financially decimated” by the trial.

The Hollywood veteran testified that he had earned between $22 million and $25 million since the 1980s.

When asked what his assets are today, Haggis said, “a couple of hundred thousand. Maybe. Maybe not.”

Breest’s lawyers said that the defendant was “not being truth” and that he is “skilled at hiding” his assets, calling upon the jury to award their client an amount that will deter and punish Haggis from any future misconduct.

“He still doesn’t recognize that he did anything wrong,” said Ilann Maazel, one of Breest’s lawyers.
