Police have discovered what happened to a 20-year-old South Carolina man that was reported missing two months ago: he fell into the plastic shredder at the recycling plant where he worked.
Duncan Alexander Burrell Gordon was reported missing in May. The last time he was seen was at his job at the Industrial Recycling and Recovery Inc. recycling plant in Greer, South Carolina.
Gordon was considered missing because there was no body. However, new evidence showed otherwise.
According to the Spartanburg County Coroner, Rusty Clevenger, Gordon fell into the shredder while we was working on May 5.
The machine at the recycling plant was inspected four times, Clevenger added. The first time was by Gordon’s father, who is a supervisor at the plant. By the third search, which included a cadaver dog, material was found.
Between the time that Gordon was reported missing and the first investigator came to inspect the machine, around 30 tons of plastic had been processed, leaving little behind.
“I ask you to also consider that the missing man weighed between 210 and 250 pounds, Clevenger added. “What was recovered by the detective may be approximately 2 ounces.”
Later on, the blood found on the machine was tested, and the DNA fit with that of Gordon’s parents.
"What we have tested and was positive came from under a support under the conveyor belt just after the plastic shredding machine," he wrote, according to WYFF-TV.
The incident is still under investigation. Police have not commented on the nature of the death and did not specify whether it was accidental or considered a homicide.
The Coroner’s Office closed the missing person investigation on Wednesday.
