American Airlines temporarily interrupted its flights throughout the United States on Christmas Eve due to a “technical” failure of which it did not give details.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the grounding was issued at the request of the airline, on one of the busiest days of the year.

"Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience," the airline reported.

Social media users who found themselves delayed at their gates reported problems scanning their boarding passes.

When asked by X when the issue would be resolved, the airline responded:

“Our team is currently working to resolve the issue. “No estimated time frame has been provided, but they are trying to resolve it in the shortest time possible.”

Shortly before 8:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, American Airlines said the ground stop was being lifted and flights were beginning to board.
