Johnny Depp has testified in front of the jury in the trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The actor claimed that he stayed with his "abusive" ex-wife for so long because he "didn't want to fail" and feared she would commit suicide.

"I wanted to try to make it work," he said. "I thought maybe I could help her."

During the trial, Depp referenced a moment in his childhood when his mother, Betty Sue Palmer, attempted suicide after his father, John Christopher Depp, left, and said the memory influenced his decision.

"Millisecond. Heard had talked about suicide on a couple of occasions, so that also becomes a factor, that's something that lives in the back of your brain," he said.

"I'm sure it's somehow related to my father bearing with stoicism while my mother beat him to death," he added.
