A former staffer for Governor Andrew Cuomo was killed by a passing car after his Lyft driver kicked him out of the car in the middle of a Delaware highway on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Lyft driver of Sidney Wolfe’s car stopped in the middle of the Route 1 Coastal Highway’s left lane at about 1:44 a.m. and told his passengers to get out of the car, according to Delaware State Police.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla behind the Lyft allegedly switched lanes to avoid the stopped car but hit Wolfe, who had just gotten out of the rear passenger side and was standing in the road, reported The New York Post.

The other passengers were not injured. The Lyft driver fled the scene. The driver of the Corolla remained at the scene, police said.

“Shocked & saddened to hear this tragic news,” Cuomo tweeted about his former senior policy adviser. “Sid was a phenomenal public servant who worked relentlessly for the betterment of all NY’ers.”

A later investigation revealed that the Lyft driver had picked up Sidney and his friends at Dewey Beach and was taking them to Bethany Beach when they had an argument and he terminated the drive.

Lyft said that it was “heartbroken by the incident.”

“Our hearts are with Mr. Wolf’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and we’ve reached out to offer our support,” the company said in a statement. “We have permanently removed the driver from the Lyft community and are assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”

The Lyft driver was identified by police later on. Authorities said he “cooperated” with investigators, according to a police spokesman.

“No charges have been filed at this time and we are not releasing the names of those involved unless they are charged,” the spokesman said. “Whether charges will be brought will be determined as the investigation progresses. This could take several months as the case continues to be investigated.”
