After the two films reported similar ticket sales on Sunday, Monday's final numbers crown "Elvis" as king of the weekend with $31.1 million grossed from Friday through Sunday, according to final figures from Warner Bros.

And although "Top Gun; Maverick" appeared to be tied with the biopic of the King of Rock & Roll on Sunday, the final studio figure on Monday showed it earned $29.6 million.

Still, both films exceeded their producers' financial expectations from their respective releases. The Presley biopic, directed by Baz Luhrmann opened above its projected release and attracted a large number of older moviegoers—a segment of the audience that has been slow to return to theaters during the pandemic.

"Top Gun: Maverick" held remarkably well, falling a modest 34% in its fifth weekend. Overall, the Joseph Kosinski-directed film starring Tom Cruise has earned around $1 billion worldwide, including more than $520 million domestically.

"Elvis," starring young actor Austin Butler as Presley, came into the weekend with expectations near $25 million. Among recent music biopics, a $30.5 million debut puts the King ahead of Elton John’s "Rocketman,” which launched with $25.7 million in 2019, though not in the same class as Freddie Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" that opened with $51.1 million in 2018.
