Elon Musk’s 18-year-old son filed a request seeking to legally change his gender from male to female and change their last name in an attempt to cut all ties with their dad.
"I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape, or form," Musk’s son said.
Xavier Musk filed the request in Santa Monica, California, on April 18, seeking to be known as Vivian Jenna Wilson. The transgender teenager explained that he wishes to take his mother's last name to distance himself from his father.
Musk was married to Vivian's mother, Canadian author Justine Wilson, from 2000 to 2008. Their first child, Nevada, was born in 2002 and died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at ten weeks. The couple had twin sons, Xavier and Griffin, and triplets, Damian, Kai, and Saxon, now 16.
The five teenagers have kept a fairly low profile, despite the fact that their father has joint custody. Musk also has two other children with Canadian singer Grimes, X Æ A-Xii and Exa Dark Sideræl, who goes by Y.
It is unclear what is behind Xavier's rejection of his father in such a public way. Musk has not yet commented on the issue, and it is unclear whether he was aware of Xavier's plan before the court documents were filed.
Musk has spoken out on a number of transgender issues and last year complained about how people used their own pronouns. He also said he was a fan of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has been condemned by the LGBTQ+ community for his bill preventing discussion of gender identity and homosexuality in children's classrooms.
Las week, Musk spoke out against professionals who criticized a new Ricky Gervais stand-up comedy special after the show was branded "transphobic."
“The ‘critics’ do not seek to criticize, but rather to signal virtue. They are out of touch with the people, and therefore lose their credibility with the audience," Musk said in response to the criticism of the show.
However, Musk has also insisted that he is fully in favor of LGBT rights, and cites Tesla's consistently high ratings on lists of the best places for LGBT people to work as evidence of his open-mindedness.
The next court hearing in Xavier's case is scheduled for Friday.
