Valerie, a 16-year-old Ukrainian, was supposed to graduate this year from her school in the city of Kharkiv. However, the building was destroyed by Russian shelling.

photograph of the student went viral on social media. In the image, Valerie is wearing the dress she planned to wear to her prom, which was canceled because of Russia’s invasion of her country. In the background, her school can be seen destroyed by the attacks of the Kremlin soldiers.

Valerie posed amidst the rubble of her former school in Kharkiv in a red dress with a plunging neckline and wide princess skirt.

"My niece was due to graduate from her high school this year. She and her friends bought dresses and were looking forward to the day. Then the Russians came. Her school was directly attacked and destroyed. Today, she has returned to what is left of her school and her plans," said Anna Episheva, the young girl's aunt, who now lives in Toronto, Canada, in statements quoted by Infobae.

The image was also released by Oleksandra Matviichuk, director of the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties.

In another post, Matviichuk uploaded a video where students can be seen waltzing in front of the ruined building in an apparent farewell to their school.

"Ten graduating students from the N134 school in Kharkiv, Ukraine that was destroyed by the Russians in late February 2022, danced a farewell school waltz among the ruins of their former school. You can see their parents who also attended this moving graduation day," the activist stated on her Twitter account.

At least 1,888 schools in Ukraine have been attacked since the start of the war with Russia on February 24, according to data revealed last week by the international organization Save the Children.

Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science claimed that this figure is more than double that recorded between 2014 and 2021 when some 750 educational institutions were damaged, destroyed, or forced to close their doors due to the Crimean war.

Of the 1,888 schools attacked, some 180 have been completely destroyed, while the remaining more than 1,700 have suffered some damage. More than half of the schools attacked are in eastern Ukraine, added Save the Children in a statement quoted by Infobae.
