Xavier Lopez, 10, was identified as one of the fatalities in the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, his mother, Felicia Martinez, confirmed to The Washington Post.

"He was funny, never serious, and his smile...that smile I'll never forget. He always made anybody happy," she said of her son, a fourth-grader.

Days before completing his last year of elementary school, Xavier was counting down the days to officially move up the academic ladder to Flores de Uvalde Middle School.

"He really couldn't wait to go to high school," his mother said, quoted by CNN en Español.

Xavier's last photo was taken shortly after he received his primary school certificate. His mother told him she was proud and that she loved him before saying goodbye with a hug. But she never imagined that would be the last moment she would share with her "mama's boy."

Xavier is one of 19 children and two adults killed in the deadliest school shooting since the Sandy Hook tragedy in December 2012, where 20 children and six adults died.

For hours, the families of the victims waited for reports to confirm whether their loved ones survived the attack at the school.

"We see people coming out terrified. They're all crying. They're telling them their son died," state Sen. Roland Gutierrez told CNN Tuesday night from a civic center in Uvalde.

More than 24 hours after the crime, the names and stories of the victims of the shooting are slowly becoming known, including those of Amerie Jo Garza, Jose Flores Jr., Uziyah Garcia, and Lexi Rubio, all ten years old, as well as teacher Eva Mireles.
