At least three people died and an estimated 39 others were injured on Monday after a powerful explosion took place near the capital of the Dominican Republic, authorities said as of Monday night.

The explosion took place at a bakery in the town of San Cristobal, west of the capital city of Santo Domingo, in an area known as “Old Marketplace.” The fire caused by the explosion spread to a nearby hardware store and furniture store.

It is still unclear what caused the explosion.

The victims include two adults and a four-month-old baby, the national health services said in a statement. They suffered burns on almost 90% of their bodies, said Dr. Mario Lama, director of the agency. At least 39 others were injured as of Monday night.

Authorities expect the death toll to increase as firefighters continue to fight the fire left behind by the explosion and have been unable to enter buildings.

People were ordered to clear the downtown business area, out of fear that other buildings could collapse.

“These buildings are very weak,” legislator Franklin Rodriguez told local media.

President Luis Abinader said he is coordinating with local authorities to provide relief efforts.

“Our main objective here has been to safeguard the greatest number of human lives,” Joel Santos, minister of the presidency, said during a press conference.
