Several schools in Puerto Rico closed on Monday after heavy rains caused widespread flooding and landslides over the weekend, reported The Associated Press.

Throughout the weekend, some parts of the island saw more than six inches of rain in less than six hours, according to the Commissioner for the Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration, Nino Correa.

The rains affected over 45 households and sent dozens of people seeking shelter as their homes were filled with water.

"We have about 45 families that were affected by the internal flooding in their homes. We have been able to assist them, we have already taken a census of the affected families to see how, properly, directly, on behalf of the municipality, we can assist them and help them,” said Mayor Carlos Lopez.

Authorities also closed down many main roads due to high water levels and trees that were knocked down. Coastal areas saw the worst flooding as large waves up to 13 feet high hit the island’s north coast.

"Additional showers are moving over eastern and northern Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dangerous driving conditions are expected," San Juan’s National Meteorological Service warned in a tweet on Sunday.
