The New York Police Department arrested Frank R. James on Wednesday, identified as the suspect in the Brooklyn subway shooting that injured more than 20 people.
James, 62, was arrested by patrol officers in New York City's East Village, three officials confirmed to CNN. The detainee will face terrorism-related charges in Brooklyn federal court.
Police believe that when the train stopped in the tunnel between the 59th and 36th Street stations, a man wearing a gas mask threw smoke bombs and discharged 33 shots, CBS News reported.
Authorities found the key to a van among the items they believe were in the attacker's possessions. Additionally, they found a Glock 9 millimeter pistol, three magazines, a hand ax, fireworks, and gasoline.
The suspect has residences in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A few days ago, in the latter city, he allegedly rented the van that connected him to the incident, ABC reported.
The vehicle was parked five minutes from the Kings Highway station in southern Brooklyn, where the attacker is believed to have entered the subway.
The suspect's description was obtained from a cell phone video shared by a witness.
NYPD officials say James had already been arrested nine times in New York and three times in New Jersey, according to The New York Times. Authorities noted that if convicted, James could face life in prison.
The shooting occurred inside the 36th Street station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Authorities have confirmed 23 injuries—10 of them from gunshot wounds, and five of them are in critical condition. In addition, about 20 passengers were treated for smoke inhalation.
Months before the Brooklyn subway attack, James posted threatening videos on YouTube in which he spoke of violence and claimed that more mass shootings were needed in the U.S. In the recordings, he often used racist and misogynistic language, reported El Mundo.
