About a week after attorneys for actress Amber Heard said she is unable to pay the $8 million judgment she was hit with after being sued for defamation by ex-husband Johnny Depp, the Aquaman star was spotted boarding a private plane to New Jersey, according to a new report from TMZ.
The tabloid entertainment network reported that the stunning blue-eyed blonde took the private jet to New Jersey to take meetings in Manhattan and then return to Washington, D.C. where she has been staying in Northern Virginia not too far from the Alexandria courthouse where the trial took place.
TMZ reported that Heard’s sister took the trip with her with two other unidentified individuals and it is uncertain what the context of the meetings was or with whom.
The Drive Angry star was hit with many negative comments about the private jet on social media although there is no indication she was the one who paid for the flight.
Some media are also making the fair point that under the circumstances Heard would have a difficult time traveling regular commercial airlines due to the scrutiny from the recent Depp trial.
“Of course Amber Heard’s usage of the private plane attracted its share of negative headlines and negative comments on Twitter,” wrote Cinema Blend’s Mack Rawden.
“Saying you can’t afford to pay a legal judgment and then flying private, a luxury most people could never afford, isn’t exactly the best optics, but in her defense, the situation is a bit more complicated than that.
“There was so much intense focus on the trial and so many people developed very aggressive opinions on the matter that her just buying a standard plane ticket doesn’t exactly seem advisable. Even with a mask, it’s unlikely she’d be able to blend into an airport for hours.”
The entertainment publication also pointed out the meetings could have been business related in hopes to get more film contracts.
The Fairfax County Circuit Court jury awarded Heard $2 million from the jury over a comment Depp’s former lawyer made, which diminished $15 million she owes.
That number was reduced to $10.35 million based on the Virginia statutory cap on punitive damages, which reduced the star’s total debt to $8.35 million.
At this time, it is unclear whether Depp will actually try to collect the judgment.
His lawyers have asserted the trial was never about money, but rather vindication to assert he was innocent of the accusations she made against him.
It is possible Depp may agree to waive or reduce the judgment in agreement for Heard not to file an appeal the verdict to a higher court.
The celebrity couple were married from 2015 to 2017, and shared a marriage many have described as rocky.
