Two people, including a child, were killed and several others injured on Tuesday afternoon after a boat capsized in the Hudson River near Manhattan’s Pier 84, authorities reported.
The boat started sinking at around 2:46 p.m., sending passengers into the water and screaming for help. There were 12 people on board.
A nearby ferry rushed to the site of the accident to rescue the victims from the water. A seven-year-old boy and a 50-year-old woman were taken to local hospitals, but their conditions deteriorated quickly and they were pronounced dead shortly after. Nine other passengers were also sent to the hospital but are in stable condition.
“I saw people screaming in the water, and then I just called 911 to just make sure they were OK,” Laidy Garcia, who witnessed the accident from New Jersey, told the New York Post.
“The ferry saw them and moved close towards them, and they were the first ones to get to them, and then I saw a Coast Guard police officer go up to the ferry where the people were.”
“We noticed emergency crews and helicopters coming in. And then I could see in the distance that there was like people being pulled onto boats, nearby boats,” said Emily Ryan, another witness.

A Coast Guard official said it was not yet clear what caused the vessel to capsize. However, there had been a small craft advisory and the waves were elevated.
The boat had been rented out by a family and some friends. It had launched from Weehawken, New Jersey, across the river from Midtown Manhattan.
