The former director of a zoo in Mexico allegedly killed four of the zoo’s pygmy goats to serve them at an employee Christmas party, according to authorities.

Jose Ruben Nava, who has been the director of a local zoo in Chilpancingo Mexico, was replaced on January 12 after a deer died under his care. However, a subsequent investigation brought to light several other incidents that happened during his time running the zoo.

Officials found that some of the zoo’s animal collection had been sold off, traded, and even eaten under Nava’s orders.

Most disturbingly, Nava is being accused of killing four of the zoo’s male pygmy goats to cook and serve them at an employee Christmas party at the zoo, according to the State Environment Department's Director of Wildlife Fernando Ruiz Gutierrez.

“These four animals were slaughtered and cooked on the zoo’s premises, and were served as food at the year-end party,” Ruiz Gutierrez said.

“This put the health of the people who ate them at risk because these animals were not fit for human consumption,” he said.

According to the state environment department, Nava also traded a zebra for tools needed to fix things around the zoo. However, authorities did not locate any such tools during their investigation.

Nava also allegedly sold off Watusi cattle to private individuals.

It is unclear if Nava has been formally charged with the crimes or if he has a lawyer.
