A Florida neighborhood was evacuated on Wednesday morning after authorities found several explosives in a backyard.

According to police, all of the homes within a half-mile area of the house in Brevard County were evacuated.

Authorities initially arrived at the property on McCleod Drive to put out a camper fire that had started overnight. However, once the fire was put out, they found a tree that had caught on fire north of where the camper fire started.

Upon a closer look at the backyard, authorities found explosives, “some of which had been going off throughout the night causing damage to the home,” Cocoa police said.

When the explosives were found, authorities made the decision to evacuate the surrounding area to avoid any accidents. Brevard County Sherriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene to locate and remove any hazards.

"The decision was made to evacuate all surrounding homes in order to locate all potential hazards," said the police in a statement.

"Patrol officers have blocked access to McLeod Dr. between U.S. Highway 1 and Dixie Ct. to Bellaire Dr. on the south and Grandview Blvd. on the north. All properties within this perimeter have been evacuated until the scene is secured,” the statement continued.

The scene was cleared by around 2:40 p.m. local time and residents were able to return home.

It is unclear what kind of explosives were found or how many. However, police determined that the fire initially started due to the explosives.

No one was at the house at the time and no injuries were reported.

This is a developing story.
