The Eiffel Tower was evacuated this Sunday just hours before the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, after a man was seen scaling the facade of the iconic structure.

The suspect was seen, shirtless, climbing the 1,083-foot-high tower. It is unclear where his feat began, but videos shared on social media showed him right above the Olympic rings that adorn the second section of the monument.

Once the authorities were notified, the police were forced to close the tower and evacuate everyone present.

The Eiffel Tower was a centerpiece of the Olympics opening ceremony, with Céline Dion serenading the city from one of its viewing areas.

The memorial is not expected to be part of the closing ceremony, which was scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. at the Stade de France, in the suburb of Saint-Denis.

More than 30,000 police officers were mobilized in Paris and elsewhere to monitor the final Olympic events and the closing ceremony this Sunday.

March 15, 2022 became a historic date for the Eiffel Tower, which has always been involved in the great milestones of innovation. That day, the monument went from 1,063 feet high to 1,083 feet after the installation of a new digital radio antenna.
