Queen Elizabeth II died of “old age” at 96 years old, according to the death certificate released on Thursday that states her official cause of death.

According to the death certificate, published by the National Records of Scotland, the queen died at Balmoral Castle in Ballater, Scotland on September 8 at 3:10 p.m. The document was signed by Princess Anne, the queen’s daughter, who was there at the time the queen passed away.

"I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother's life," the 72-year-old said in a statement issued in the days following the monarch's death.

The death certificate was registered in Aberdeenshire by Princess Anne. It was certified by doctor Douglas James Allan Glass. The registrar general of Scotland, Paul Lowe, authorized its release.

Buckingham Palace first announced the queen’s deteriorating condition through a statement issued on September 8 at around 12:35 p.m., around three hours before she passed away. The statement said her doctors were concerned about her health and were placing her under medical supervision.

After a grand funeral, the queen was placed in a tomb inside the King George VI Memorial Chapel at St. George’s Chapel inside Windsor Castle.

The tomb is marked by a slab of hand-carved Belgian black marble. Inscribed on the ledger stone in brass letters inlays is the queen’s name alongside her husband’s, mother’s, and father’s names.

St. George’s chapel reopened to the public on Thursday with hundreds of people lined up to pay their respects to the queen after she was laid to rest. Visitors can visit the chapel by buying a ticket to Windsor Castle.
