Film director Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti sparked chaos on social media on Thursday after sharing a meme highlighting the differences between the careers of Cuban actresses Ana de Armas and Corina Mestre, the former teacher of the "Blonde" star at the National School of Art (ENA) in Havana.
"Corina Mestre suspended Ana de Armas for making a film. Today one has the National Theater Award and the other is on her way to the Oscar," said Cremata, director of the films Nada, Viva Cuba, and Chamaco, among others, and winner of the "Grand Prix Écrans Juniors" at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2005.
It did not take long before cybernauts responded to Cremata’s Facebook post.
Rogelio Collado, for example, said that "Corina may be a good actress, but she is envious and a trunk of ‘b****’, that is the only justification. In the end, she is only a good actress, Ana de Armas is already a star."
Yisel Duque Casado said that Mestre has "all the bad things that can exist. I can imagine how much envy was running through her veins at that time, but thank God Ana is a great artist and we are very proud of her."
Silvia Jacome, also commented that this has not been the only case of alleged harassment by the veteran actress. Mestre allegedly determined to ruin the career of one of her friend’s daughter.
Another user, Yubi Gómez noted that, although "Corina's talent as an actress is undeniable, her square and communist ideology makes her mediocre. In this case Ana de Armas prevails as an example of what a Cuban in freedom can achieve. Karma always puts everyone in their place".
Another comment that generated many positive reactions was that of Simón Casanova, who pointed out that, although Corina Mestre "has always been biased towards partisanship," the guilty party is "the system."
"The injustice was not in Corina, but in the structures and provisions of the Higher Education System and the Institute. And also in the ENA. I make this comment because Mario Rodríguez Alemán also had to remove teachers of the highest quality because of said regulations that even he could not change. For that reason, Leo Brower could not teach music. His works are studied in conservatories in Paris, but he did not have a degree, therefore he could not teach," he said.
Corina Mestre Vilaboy has been a well-known Cuban actress with a long career and is also known for her support of the Castro regime. The actress and professor is one of the signatories of a recent statement published by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), which denies police repression against demonstrators during protests on the island.
Ana de Armas could be one of the Oscar nominees for Best Actress after starring in "Blonde," Andrew Dominik's film about Marilyn Monroe.
