Global phenomenon Top Gun: Maverick continues to break records left and right, including a long-running title held by another legendary Paramount film.

On Wednesday, Paramount announced that the sequel to 1986 cult classic Top Gun had officially brought in $601.9 million at the domestic box office, surpassing the record of the company’s iconic 1997 film, Titanic.

Titanic held Paramount’s record for highest domestic-gross film for 25 years with the $600.7 million it brought in during its initial release. The new Top Gun is only the 12th movie in domestic box office history to cross $600 billion

Top Gun: Maverick also became Paramount’s biggest worldwide-grossing film of all time on Friday, where it hit $602.5 million from 65 foreign markets and $606 million in North America, totaling a whopping $1.2 billion globally.

The summer blockbuster has become the biggest Paramount live action move of all time in 28 overseas markets, including major ones like the U.K., France, Australia and Brazil, reports Deadline.

Tom Cruise earned his first $1 billion movie with the highly anticipated sequel, a mark he hit at the end of June.

More than 16% of Top Gun 2′s audience has seen the film more than once in theaters, while 4 percent have seen it four times or more, according to Paramount.

It did not air in Chinese after tech giant Tencent withdrew its investment over fears that Communist Party officials would be angry about the company’s affiliation with a movie celebrating the American military, reported The Wall Street Journal.

Slashfilm noted that “a race between the Unsinkable Ship and Tom Cruise in a fighter jet” is complicated by Titanic’s 3D re-release in 2012 that brought in another $57.8 million domestically.

Technically, James Cameron’s magnum opus still holds the top spot at Paramount with $659.3 milion in domestic grosses if you factor in its rereleases.
