In a stunning comeback during the second-half of Sunday’s Super Bowl, The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, winning 25-22 in overtime.

Their victory in Las Vegas marks the midwestern NFL team as the first to win back-to-back championships since Tom Brady’s New England Patriots did it nearly 20 years ago.

The win was the Chief’s fourth Super Bowl victory, and third in the past five years. Kansas City won its first Super Bowl 45 years ago in 1969.

The comeback was unexpected as the 49ers were considered the favorite by a wide margin. The San Francisco Niners steadily controlled the field in the first half of the game and maintained a lead during most of the third quarter.

Things took a turn however after Kansas City scored a touchdown later in the third quarter, changing the pace and taking the lead at 13-10, leading to a tense fourth quarter.

San Francisco took back their lead with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter at 19-16, leaving little hope for the Chiefs, but after an unsuccessful attempt to reach the end zone, the Kansas City scored a field goal with only a few seconds left to tie the game.

Fans got a treat since this was the first Super Bowl since the NFL changed its overtime rules for postseason games in 2022. Before, the first team to score in overtime would win.

In the changed scheme, both teams get a chance to possess the ball, a turn of events that helped the Chiefs achieve victory since San Francisco scored first with a field goal, taking the score from 19-19 to 22-19.

Not long after however, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a three-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr., taking the final score to 25-22 with the Chiefs in the lead.

“It was a microcosm of our whole season,” Mahomes said during the trophy presentation. “I'm just proud of the guys that kept believing. And I'm proud of the coaches for calling up those plays that got us some touchdowns there at the end.”

After the winning pass, Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP, a title bestowed to him after each of the Chiefs' Super Bowl wins in the last five years.
