Brazilian landscape and nature photographer Fernando Braga shared a series of photos of the moment lightning struck the Christ the Redeemer (Cristo del Corcovado) monument in Rio de Janeiro.

Braga explained that he recorded the bolt that fell on the sculpture and on the Corcovado's antennas between 6:55 p.m. and 7:03 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, using a Nikon D800 camera.

Brazilian media reported that the lightning strike, which took place on the head of the  Christ like monument left the structure damaged. The famous Christ of the Corcovado is the work of Polish-born French sculptor Paul Landowski.

There are at least 35 Landowski sculptures in Paris, but the most famous is the Corcovado, which depicts Jesus of Nazareth stretching out his arms towards the city of Rio. A large tourist community visits the site each year, especially during Carnival (20 -February 21st).

The statue, 30 meters high on a pedestal of an additional eight meters, is already 92 years old, having been inaugurated in 1931. It is not only a tourist landmark, but also a place of pilgrimage for believers and a reference point for artists like Braga.

The event did not go unnoticed on social networks. Many related it to the social crisis Brazil is experiencing and impugned the meaning of the thunderbolt as a theological sign.
