A Colorado dentist was arrested on Sunday morning for murdering his wife by poisoning her protein shakes so he could start a new life with his lover, according to a press release from the Aurora Police Department.
James Toliver Craig, 45, took his wife, Angela, 43, to the hospital on Wednesday at around 8:45 p.m. because she was experiencing “severe headaches and dizziness.” After arriving at the hospital, her condition deteriorated and she was placed in intensive care, where she was declared medically brain dead.
After considering that her death was suspicious, police launched an investigation and determined that she had been poisoned.
“When the suspicious details of this case came to light, our team of officers and homicide detectives tirelessly worked to uncover the truth behind the victim’s sudden illness and death,” Division Chief Mark Hildebrand said.
“It was quickly discovered this was in fact a heinous, complex, and calculated murder. I am very proud of our Major Crimes Homicide Unit’s hard work in solving this case and pursuing justice for the victim,” he added.
Craig allegedly searched online for poisons that could kill someone without being detected and settled for buying a can of potassium cyanide two days before his wife was admitted to the hospital, according to an affidavit.
However, investigators found that Craig had been buying other toxic chemicals that could kill a person, including arsenic and oleandrin, since before and had been placing them in his wife’s protein shakes.
Angela’s sister said Craig was known to have had “multiple affairs with several women,” had “addicted to pornography since he was a teenager, and had drugged Angela five or six years ago.
Craig was arrested for first-degree murder and was booked into jail on Sunday, according to the press release.
