Argentina's President-elect Javier Milei wants to talk to Elon Musk about equality and freedom

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has captured the attention of Argentina’s President-elect Javier Milei.

The newly elected libertarian president responded to a video shared by Musk on his social media network, “X” in which he said equality should never come before freedom.

“We need to talk, Elon,” Milei responded on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The exchange does not come as a surprise since the space industry giant and Argentine president elect have exchanged mutual praise for one another in the past.

“Prosperity is about to come to Argentina,” Musk wrote when Milei won the Nov. 19 South American runoff election.

Musk also posted an interview with Milei, in which he pledged to make his country more free than equal.

“There’s a sublime phrase by Milton Friedman that I find to be outstanding, which is that when you prioritize equality over freedom, you end up achieving neither. But when you prioritize freedom over equality, you achieve many of both,” Milei commented during the interview.

Friedman, an American economist, won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1976 and has become a highly regarded libertarian thinker among conservatives.

Milei did not hesitate to continue demonstrating his knowledge and interest about history and economic philosophy in that same interview.

He also asserted that 19th-century British economist John Stuart Mill, also argued that any society prioritizing equality “ultimately becomes a society of looters and it sinks,” and added, “That is the history of Argentina.”

Milei, who takes office on Sunday, has blasted the left-wing ideological thinking that has been adopted by some of his neighboring presidents.

Latin America has been undergoing a “pink tide” of socialist change as left-wing leaders have taken office in countries such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

The president-elect said that wealth redistribution involves “using the repressive apparatus of the state to take from the successful” and it is often redistributed “based on what the person in power wants.”

Milei has captured the attention of the world since his election was an upset against his Peronist challenger, and because he has described himself as an “anarcho-capitalist.”

After his election, ADN reported that neighboring presidents Gabriel Boric of Chile and Gustavo Petro from Colombia expressed some concern, but that Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated him, hailing the victory as a triumph for democracy.
