National Security Council: North Korea may send nuclear weapons to Russia

Reports have surfaced that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un may soon visit Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Russia to negotiate a possible deal to send Moscow with weapons for its invasion of Ukraine, according to the U.S. National Security Council.

Discussions between Moscow and Pyongyang are “actively advancing,” after Moscow’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea in July to try and convince the communist dynasty to sell Russia artillery ammunition, the U.S. said Monday.

“We have information that Kim Jong Un expects these discussions to continue, to include leader-level diplomatic engagement in Russia,” said council's spokeswoman Adrienne Watson in an interview with to CNN.

While no U.S. official has yet established when or where such meeting would take place the Motherland, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said Tuesday that it is “closely monitoring… the possibility of Kim Jong Un visiting Russia soon.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that the Russian government had “nothing to say on the subject."

September 2022 reports surfaced that North Korea was sending military rockets and artillery shells to Moscow. So far, Pyongyang has rejected such claims, asserting it is not sending arms to Russia.  

The U.S. maintains no formal diplomatic relationship with North Korea but, sending arms to Russia amid its illegal invasion of Ukraine would violate United Nations resolutions most likely result in more sanctions upon both Moscow and Pyongyang.
