Police officers found several suitcases filled with human remains in separate incidents in Florida and Texas last week.

On Friday, the police department in Delray Beach, Florida received a call at around 4 p.m. reporting a suspicious object floating in an intercoastal waterway by the 1000 block of Palm Trail.

When officials arrived, they found a suitcase in the water. After pulling it out and examining its contents, they found dismembered human remains. Police also found two other suitcases containing dismembered human remains nearby.

“At this early stage of the investigation, the remains appear to belong to one unidentified adult female,” police said in an incident report, which that the death was being described as a homicide.

The remains, which belonged to a 5 foot 4 inches tall middle-aged woman with brown hair, were taken to the medical examiner’s office for further investigation. It remains unclear how long ago she died.

Last Thursday, a similar incident took place in Bexar County, Texas. The sheriff’s office received a call reporting a suspicious object that had been discarded on a property. When police arrived at the scene, they found a duffle bag that contained human remains.

“The first inclination, of course, is to assume that it’s a homicide scene,” Sheriff Javier Salazar told reporters.

“At this point, all we really know is that we’ve got partial human remains out here.”

There were also signs at the property that someone had been trying to burn something. However, it is common for residents of the area to burn trash, Salazar said.

The owners of the property were out of time when the duffel bag was discovered. However, they are cooperating with the investigation.

The identity of the victim remains unclear. It is also unknown how long ago the individual was killed.

"We're getting a search warrant to finish processing the scene and at that point we may know a little bit more," Salazar said. "But at this point, it's just too early to tell if the person was killed here, or if they were brought here in that piece of luggage and then dumped here."
