Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis filed to begin his presidential run Wednesday in what is sure to be a competitive race against former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination.
The Navy Judge Advocate and graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School filed the appropriate paperwork to begin his candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
DeSantis is scheduled to make an official announcement tonight at 6 p.m. EST in a Twitter Space with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
The former Florida Congressman rose in politics in 2018 when he defied the odds and defeated former Tallahassee mayor and Democratic challenger Andrew Gillum in a down to the wire 2018 gubernatorial race.
As governor, DeSantis rose to national fame when he took on the left’s policies over school policies, gender and COVID-19.
DeSantis, 44, soon rose as a conservative icon in the culture war taking on “woke” advocates. He fearlessly took on Disney for promoting sexual and gender related ideas he deemed harmful to children and banned the teaching of gender identity in schools.
DeSantis frequently speaks proudly about his work in Florida, inviting others in blue states to move to the Sunshine State where there is less regulation and more individual freedom.
While the Florida is widely popular, he faces an uphill battle in capturing the Republican nomination from former President Donald Trump who currently leads in the double digits.
Still, the race has just begun—and the primaries are a long way away.
