Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) announced on Tuesday that he is introducing a vote of no confidence resolution for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, in the latest effort to impeach the official.
“There isn’t one American who believes our southern border is secure,” Marshall said in a release.
“In the real world, if you fail at your job, you get fired — the federal government should be no different. Under this administration, every state has become a border state.” he added.
The nine-page resolution comes after Mayorkas appeared before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday. It lays out several complaints about Mayorkas claiming that he has failed to manage the border successfully amid record-breaking migration numbers.
The draft resolution, obtained by Fox News, claims that Mayorkas "does not have the confidence of the Senate or of the American people to faithfully carry out the duties of his office." Furthermore, it accuses Mayorkas of engaging in a pattern of conduct that is incompatible with his constitutional and statutory duties as Secretary of Homeland Security."
During Secretary Mayorkas’ term in office, more than 5,500,000 undocumented migrants have crossed the border, a 180% increase in encounters compared to the previous administration, the documents claim.
Additionally, more than 400,000 convicted criminals and 100 individuals on the terror watch list, and an increase in fentanyl seizures at the border have taken place under Mayorkas, the resolution states.
“This resolution puts the secretary on notice, and I am proud to have the support of 14 of my Republican colleagues in the Senate. We now look to the House to take the next step, and I stand ready for Sec. Mayorkas’ impeachment trial.”
Republicans in the House have been moving to impeach Mayorkas since last year. While many lawmakers introduced articles of impeachment, they have not yet been voted on. If successful, the impeachment would not have a great effect as it would have to face the Democrat-led Senate.
“I stand at the ready to receive articles of impeachment from the House and conduct an impeachment trial in this body,” Marshall said. “But in the meantime, I think the Senate must show our colleagues in the House that we’ve had enough of the failures from the Department of Homeland Security and believe that the Secretary is not fit to faithfully carry out the duties of his office.”
