Jussie Smollett was found guilty on Thursday of five felony counts for making false reports to the police that he was a victim of a hate crime.
Smollett was charged with six felony counts of disorderly conduct. He was acquitted on one count. Each count is punishable by up to three years in prison and a $25,000 fine. Experts have said a lighter sentence or probation is likely in Smollett’s case.
The panel of 12 deliberated for nine hours before informing the court of their decision.
In January 2019, the “Empire” actor claimed he was the victim of a hate crime in Chicago. According to Smollett, he was attacked outside of his apartment by two masked men who yelled homophobic and racist slurs at him and put a noose around his neck.
After an investigation, authorities determined that the suspects were Smollett’s acquaintances. Both men testified during the trial and claimed the actor paid them $3,500 to carry out the attack to get him media attention.
During the trial this week, Smollett took the stand and repeatedly claimed his innocence in the matter. He pleaded not guilty on all counts.
Special prosecutor Dan Webb presented camera footage as evidence that Smollett faked the hate crime. "Mr. Smollett didn't want the crime solved," Webb told jurors. "He wanted the media exposure but he didn't want the brothers apprehended."
