A Key West businessman was arrested after he fatally shot a man urinating on his building on Monday morning, according to Monroe County’s top prosecutor.

Lloyd Preston Brewer III, 57, shot the man at around 12:30 a.m. as he was urinating on the side of his building near the Searstown shopping center on North Roosevelt Boulevard, according to police.

The victim, identified as Garrett Hughes, 21, was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Both men were drunk at the time, according to surveillance footage of the incident. The video shows Brewer getting out of his car to confront Hughes, who was shirtless and unarmed.

“(Hughes) is kind of stumbling around and (Brewer) pulls up his shirt, pulls out a gun, and pumps a shot into his stomach,” Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward told Local 10 News.

Brewer then called 911 reporting that he had shot someone in self-defense. However, “the video doesn’t support that theory,” added Ward.

A subsequent investigation found that there were no prior disputes between the two men.

Brewer was taken to the Monroe County Jail and was charged with second-degree murder and a weapons charge. He is scheduled to have a first appearance hearing on Tuesday.
