Migrant attempts suicide at new NYC shelter 

A migrant who had been staying in New York City’s new migrant shelter in Brooklyn tried to commit suicide on Tuesday, authorities said. 

The 26-year-old asylum seeker was found with self-inflicted stab wounds in one of the bathrooms at the city’s new intake center in the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at around 2:15 p.m., reported the New York Post. 

According to sources, the migrant used a shaving razor to cut his forearm. He was rushed to Lutheran hospital, where he is in stable condition. 

The incident comes after many migrants refused to relocate to the newly opened migrant shelter. Last month, a group of around 50 migrants that were temporarily housed at a hotel in Midtown Manhattan refused to relocate to Brooklyn’s ferry terminal. The standoff ended when the New York Police Department cleared the migrants from the area.  

The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is meant to house, and provide food, medical care, and other services for 1,000 single men until the spring, the mayor’s office said in a press release. To promote the city’s new shelter, New York City Mayor Adams spent the coldest night of the year so far in the shelter last weekend. 

More than 42,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City since the spring and more than 28,000 of them are being sheltered by the city. So far, the city has set up five “Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief” centers and has been using around 77 hotels as emergency shelters to help house the incoming migrants.
