A Massachusetts woman is being accused of killing two of her children and critically injuring another before attempting to commit suicide by jumping out of a window, the Plymouth district attorney announced on Wednesday.
Lindsay Clancy, 32, survived the fall from the window and is recovering in a Boston hospital under police custody. The mother is being charged with three counts of strangulation, assault, and battery with a deadly weapon.
Police received a call at around 6:11 p.m. on Tuesday from Clancy’s husband saying that his wife had attempted to commit suicide.
“First responders subsequently located three children in the home under the age of 5 unconscious, with obvious signs of severe trauma,” District Attorney Timothy Cruz said during a press conference on Wednesday.
Two of the kids, aged three and five, were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A baby who had just turned eight months old survived the incident, but is in critical condition and fighting for his life.
"In incidents like this, there are usually more questions than answers," Cruz said. "We aren't here to presume motives … This is an unimaginable, senseless tragedy, and it is an ongoing investigation."
Clancy appears to have strangled her children in order to kill them, Cruz said, adding that the medical examiner will determine their cause of death in the next few days.
Investigators are considering that Clancy might have been suffering from postpartum psychosis when she tried to commit the murder-suicide. However, the children’s great-grandmother told NBC Boston that nothing seemed out of the ordinary when she spoke to Clancy last week.
“It’s a pretty shocking thing, and it is heartbreaking,” she said.
