A video caught the exact moment when a carnival ride plummeted 50 feet in India, injuring several people on Sunday night.

The tragic accident occurred at the Phase 8 amusement park in Punjab’s Mohali district in a “drop tower”—a vertical carousel-like ride that lifts people up and then drops them at high speeds while spinning.

However, things went south when an unknown malfunction caused the ride to plunge 50 feet onto the base of the machine, injuring 16 people.

The video shows the lit-up ride falling rapidly down and crashing into the platform, sending several riders flying out of their seats.

The video then shows several people loading the injured victims onto a police van because there were no ambulances in the amusement park.

We picked up the injured and rushed to the hospital,” described an eyewitness named Jaspreet Kaur, quoted by the Hindustan Times. He added that the fairground bouncers tried to “threaten” them for intervening and that the “organizers also fled the scene,” reported The New York Post.

The victims, some as young as 10 years old, are being treated at several hospitals in the area. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Despite the freak accident being attributed to a malfunction on the ride, Mohali Police are claiming that the organizers of the fairgrounds were “negligent” and promised to launch an investigation into the incident.

“We will hold an inquiry and strict action will be taken against the guilty,” Mohali Deputy Commissioner Amit Talwar said.
