Justice Department investigating Trump in Jan. 6 criminal probe: report

The Justice Department is reportedly investigating former President Donald Trump's actions following the 2020 election as part of a criminal probe into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Prosecutors in front of a grand jury are asking former White House staffers, including top aides to former Vice President Mike Pence, about conversations with Trump, his legal team and his inner circle about reports that the allies of the former president attempted to create alternate electors for the states won by President Joe Biden, according to The Washington Post.

The news outlet says the information about the department investigating Trump's actions is from two sources familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Reports of the criminal investigation come after weeks of televised hearings from the House Jan. 6 committee.

A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to The Post's request for comment while the Justice Department declined to comment.

Earlier this month, Jan. 6 committee Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) said the panel could recommend criminal charges to be brought against Trump.
